PPI Automotive Audi R8 Razor GTR

ppi-automotive-audi-r8-razor-gtr

German car tuning specialists PPI Automotive have released their PPI RAZOR GTR version of the Audi R8, and it will premiere at the Top Marques Monaco 2009. A year ago, PPI introduced their R8 RAZOR edition at the Essen Motor Show which had great success. The new GTR model has all the features the R8 RAZOR did, however PPI aimed at tweaking the R8 to get extra performance gains for the GTR version. Some of the new parts they added were a re-engineered supercharger, a ram-charged intake filtering system, and a stainless steel high performance exhaust. The power numbers for this Audi R8 tops out at 580hp at 4,700rpm, and 600Nm of torque at 6,200rpm, which is exceptional for only weighing 1,580kg.

The acceleration for this R8 is amazing, in a mere 3.7 seconds it can reach 100km/h with a maximum speed of 332km/h. This is capable from extensive testing and research performed by PPI Automotive, and with their knowledge they were able to create a true sports car. With their wind tunnel testing and development, PPI was able to enhance the vehicles aerodynamics from the previous R8 RAZOR edition. A specially designed new front bumper with diffuser attached was put in place to reduce lifting forces. Larger air vents to provide cooler air to the radiators were installed, along with new side skirts giving it a sporty look. At the rear, is a special wing that comes with an adjustable Gurney-flap, with a new rear bumper and fenders to allow cooler air to enter the engine bay. Several carbon fiber parts such as a rear diffuser were installed, and it offsets the airflow between the rear wing and newly designed front bumper.

The Audi R8 RAZOR GTR sits on lightweight MAG9 Carbon Fiber forged aluminum PPI wheels weighing in at only 8.8kgs. Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires are found on all fours and measure 255/35 ZR19 in the front and 325/25 ZR20 in the rear. A new braking system made of high performance parts was installed and it can be easily identified by its large 6-piston orange calipers. The interior received several minor upgrades such as carbon fiber throughout to save some extra weight. To name a few, carbon fiber hand-brake lever, door trims and sill protectors, radio and center console trim was all made entirely of carbon fiber

Audi showed off an e-tron prototype in the form of an R8 during the Le Mans race this year. Racing legend Frank Biela took the e-tron out for a spin in the Le Mans vers le futur demo event for EVs.

The R8 e-tron is powered by four motors connected to a wheel each for quattro grip. Combined, they provide 313 hp and 4500 Nm of torque (no it’s no a typo), propelling the two-seater from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. 70% of power goes to the rear wheels while the rest goes to the fronts. The battery sits behind the passenger cabin for a 42:58 weight distribution.

Torque vectoring from the four motors mean that understeer and oversteer can be corrected by not only targeted activation of the brakes, but also by precise increases in power by few milliseconds. The R8 e-tron is claimed to remain extremely neutral even under great lateral acceleration, “hustling through corners as if on the proverbial rails” according to Audi.

The car’s lithium-ion battery can be charged from a household plug socket (230 volts/16 amperes), taking six to eight hours to be refilled. Kinetic energy from the brakes is recuperated, channelled to the alternator and converted into electrical energy.

Audi R8 GT

Audi has lifted the covers off a more powerful, lighter and faster special edition version of its mid-engined supercar called the R8 GT. When I say lighter, I mean a whooping 100 kg lighter.

How did the guys at Ingolstadt did it you ask...do note that the standard R8 V10 is not a heavy car at 1,625 kg, thanks to its aluminum space frame body, so Audi has worked hard to shave the grams here. The GT’s windshield is made of thinner glass; the bulkhead between the passenger cell and engine compartment, as well as the rear hatch window are made of polycarbonate. These three items alone saved 9 kg. Other measures include a fixed rear wing (1.2 kg), thinner sheet metal and additional cutouts from the aluminum front hatch (2.6 kg) and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) rear hatch (6.6 kg). The rear bumpers and sideblades are also made from CFRP.

Audi’s 5.2-litre direct injection V10 engine makes 560 bhp and 540 Nm here, thanks to tweaks to the electronics. The hand built engine is paired to a six-speed dual clutch gearbox and power is goes to all wheels via Audi’s quattro AWD. The system sends 15% of power to the front axle and 85% to the rear in normal driving. Audi says that this ratio goes well with the R8 GT’s 43:57 weight distribution.

All this effort results in the Audi R8 GT having making the century sprint in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h or 199mph. It will be produced in a strictly limited number of 333 units with prices in Germany set at €193,000, or about US$256,500 at today's exchange rates.

4.2 FSI V8 Engine

The questions are legitimate and short: A Street-legal Audi R8 with rear wheel drive? And with a 560 HP supercharged engine? The answer is also short. Yes it exists! It is call the
MTM Audi R8 GT3-2 Packing 560 horsepower (412 kW) and rear-wheel-drive, the supercharged 4.2 FSI V8 puts down 580 Nm (428 lb-ft) of torque to help it pop 100 km/h (62 mph) in around 3.9 seconds. Top speed arrives at a claimed 317 km/h (197 mph).
The Audi R8 GT3-2 ditches all-wheel drive for rear-wheel drive. Elsewhere, the company installed a differential lock, an adjustable sports suspension, an improved braking system, aerodynamic carbon fiber body parts (front spoiler, side skirts and rear wing), and 20-inch forged wheels with Dunlop Sport Maxx GT (or Michelin Cup Sport) tires.

Audi R8 5.2 FSI
The R8 5.2 FSI wins the title for production supercars. The S5 Cabriolet, the RS 6, the S4 Avant, and the Q7 V12 TDI each placed in the top five in their respective classes. The prizes awarded by a jury from the Auto Bild SportsCars monthly were presented last evening at the Essen Motor Show.

With 650 invited guests looking on, Michael-Julius Renz, Head of Sales Germany at AUDI AG, accepted the prize for the Audi TT RS; Werner Frowein, Managing Director of quattro GmbH, accepted the award for the Audi R8 5.2 FSI.

The title “Sports Car of the Year” is one of the most sought-after prizes in the German automobile industry. 51,637 readers of the magazine took part in the voting this year. Sports cars that had previously proven their worth in more than 300 tests and road reports were nominated in eight classes, which were further broken down into Tuning and Production. Besides the two group winners, four other Audi models placed in the top five in their respective classes: the S5 Cabriolet in the class “Production Convertible/Roadster”; the RS 6 in “Production Sedan”; the S4 Avant in “Production Station Wagon”; and the Q7 V12 TDI in the category “Production SUV.”

The panel of experts at Auto Bild SportsCars only crowns pure-blooded sports cars as “Sports Car of the Year.” In conjunction with TÜV Rheinland (Rhineland Inspection Authority), the magazine’s jurors regularly conduct exacting road tests to thoroughly assess the latest sports cars.

The Audi TT RS Coupé is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with gasoline direct injection that generates a power output of 250 kW (340 hp) and a torque of 450 Nm (331.9 lb-ft). The five-cylinder engine enables the TT RS to perform extraordinary feats. In conjunction with quattro permanent all-wheel drive and a high-performance chassis, the engine makes the compact Audi TT RS an exceptional sports car.

Generating 386 kW (525 hp) and 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque, the 5.2-liter, ten-cylinder engine delivers breathtaking performance. Superior Audi technologies such as quattro all-wheel drive, the lightweight aluminum chassis featuring Audi Space Frame construction, the innovative all-LED headlights and the distinctive design put the R8 5.2 FSI in the pole position in its competitive field.
